People love marble’s veining but fear it “scratches and etches easily”. In fact, once you understand its physical nature and clean and protect it correctly, marble tops and floors can stay beautiful for decades. Here is a practical care, sealing and refinishing guide from our Hong Kong stone consultants.
Marble is mostly calcium carbonate at Mohs 3–4 with natural micro-pores, so distinguish two common problems: etching happens when acids — lemon, vinegar, wine, toilet cleaner — burn off the surface polish into dull marks; staining happens when dark liquids such as soy sauce or coffee penetrate the pores. Treatments differ: etching needs polishing, staining usually starts with deep cleaning.
1. Use a pH-neutral cleaner or plain water with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately.
2. Use coasters and trivets; serve fruit and drinks on a tray.
3. Always chop on a board, never directly on the marble.
4. Put a mat at entrances so shoe grit does not abrade floors.
5. Check the sealer every 2–3 years (1–2 years in bathrooms) and top up when needed.
Avoid tile/toilet cleaners, bleach, lemon and vinegar; never scrub with wire wool or abrasive pads; do not let water stand (especially in bathrooms); do not apply wax or cooking oil as “care” — it traps dust and yellows; never drag heavy objects, and pad furniture feet.
Professional sealing applies a breathable penetrating sealer that enters the pores without sealing the surface, giving you time to wipe spills away. Have it applied once installation is complete, then leave 24–48 hours to cure before normal use; re-check kitchen tops every 2–3 years and bathrooms every 1–2 years.
When the surface shows widespread etching, dulled shine, dense fine scratches, or sealer no longer absorbs, professional crystallisation is worthwhile: it re-hardens the surface through grinding for shine and durability far beyond waxing. Deep scratches or chips need repair first. Review residential tops every 5–8 years and high-traffic floors every 2–4 years.
In Hong Kong’s humid spring and summer, ventilate bathroom marble, replace blackened silicone promptly so water does not sit at joints, and use anti-mould sealant near windows and balconies with periodic sealer checks.
Marble floors, walls and staircases are laid from multiple slabs with 1–2 mm joints. Seamless treatment does not mean a literally zero joint — stone expands and contracts with temperature and humidity, so movement allowance must remain. Instead, joints are filled and ground until they are nearly invisible, stain-proof and smooth to the touch, the standard finish on high-end marble projects. Our four-step process:
1. Routing & cleaning: joints are routed open to 2–3 mm and all cement residue, blackened silicone and grease are removed.
2. Colour-matched filling: marble dust blended with epoxy is tinted to the slab and filled joint by joint, following veining continuity.
3. Full-surface grinding: diamond pads from coarse to fine grind joints and slabs level, eliminating lippage.
4. Crystallisation & sealing: the surface is re-hardened to a uniform shine and finished with a breathable penetrating sealer.
Arrange treatment when joints turn black or mouldy, joint edges chip, lippage becomes obvious, or during any major refinishing. Pricing is by area and joint length — send a WhatsApp photo for an indicative quote. A residential living/dining room typically takes 1–2 days; commercial venues can be scheduled overnight with no loss of trading hours.
Follow this daily-to-long-cycle routine and marble can keep its shine and structural life for decades:

| Frequency | Task | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | Clean and dry | pH-neutral cleaner or water with a soft damp cloth; wipe dry straight away |
| Weekly | Check joints & silicone | Look for blackening, peeling or trapped water in bathrooms and floors |
| Quarterly | Surface inspection | New etch marks or stains; check coasters and trivets are in place |
| Every 2–3 years | Sealer check & top-up | Kitchen tops 2–3 years; wet bathroom areas 1–2 years |
| Every 5–8 years | Professional crystallisation | Tops 5–8 years; high-traffic floors 2–4 years; combine with seamless treatment |
It depends: acid etch marks (dull patches) can usually be restored by polishing and crystallisation; stains depend on depth, and most surface staining responds to deep cleaning or honing. Send a WhatsApp photo for assessment first — do not try chemical cleaners yourself, as they can make it worse.
Yes — apply a breathable penetrating sealer once installation is complete and allow 24–48 hours to cure before normal use. Re-check kitchen tops every 2–3 years and bathrooms every 1–2 years, more often in heavy water/oil contact areas.
Wax is only a short-lived surface film that can block the marble’s breathable pores; crystallisation re-hardens the surface through professional grinding for a far more durable shine and is the method used in proper refinishing.
Blackening usually means mouldy silicone and dirt trapped in the joint, treated by routing and colour-matched epoxy filling; lippage requires full-surface grinding followed by crystallisation — the “seamless marble treatment”. WhatsApp a photo of the joints so we can advise whether spot repair or full refinishing is needed; overnight works can be arranged for commercial premises.
