Hong Kong International Airport Terminal 3 expansion — 55,000 ㎡ of public-area stone facing the twin tests of the world's densest passenger flows and construction without closing the airport. HENGSHENG MARBLE S&T CO. LIMITED Stone delivered digitally in 18 months.
Terminal 3 is conceived as "flowing cloud": the check-in hall takes warm Botticino as its feature wall, giving travellers a sense of welcome; the security lanes, boarding bridges and transfer lobby use Silver Grey Granite for visual unity, noise reduction and wear resistance; the VIP and first-class lounges use book-matched Statuario slabs for ceremony — three stone vocabularies carrying passengers from arrival to boarding.
HENGSHENG MARBLE S&T CO. LIMITED Stone supplied and installed all public-area stone: 55,000 ㎡ of walls and floors, 3,800 round columns, 12,000 floor pieces and 2,400 tactile-paving segments, all factory-numbered and five-axis CNC machined to ±0.5 mm, then trucked at night direct to 64 island work zones — the airport never closed, with just 4.5 hours of work each night across 18 months.
Three principal stones cover every scenario from arrival to boarding, unifying wear resistance, slip resistance and visual wayfinding.

Six stages from 3D scanning to island-by-island night installation — T3 never closed; every noisy trade fitted into the 4.5-hour night window.
360° laser scanning of the 64 island work zones produced millimetre-level point clouds; BIM overlay resolved 412 structural deviations in advance.
All floor slabs were numbered and crated in the factory by work island, trucked at night direct to their island and assembled in a single shift.
Curved panels for 3,800 round columns lifted with vacuum suction and purpose-made slings, five-axis CNC pre-machined to ±0.5 mm.
Every batch passed 100% inspection at a temporary inspection island before entering a work zone; anything failing went back to the factory — no delayed rework.
The 8.4 m columns were clad in pre-cast segments, assembled in place with joints held under 0.8 mm.
23:30–04:00 was the only work window; all noisy trades concentrated there. Across 18 months the airport never stopped operating.

The 12 m double-height walls use underbolt dry-hanging with three-way adjustable clamps; 304 stainless fittings passed 2 million fatigue cycles.
Standard 1.5 mm joints with color-matched epoxy read visually as ≤0.3 mm after polishing; the security zone's year-round vibration causes no cracking.
Passenger stair treads use double-groove anti-slip strips at R11 — the highest EN 16165 standard for public spaces.
Duty-free stone siliconised and crystallised to stain resistance grade 5; gloss still holds at 90° after 24 hours of foot traffic.
Twenty-four Statuario slabs pre-assembled and approved in the factory; all four VIP passages assembled on site with zero errors.
For the terminal's 60 ℃ temperature range, expansion joints sealed with elastic sealant all passed 200,000 fatigue cycles.

T3 handles 230,000 passengers a day; the floors must be both mirror-beautiful and slip-safe — conventional polished finishes cannot do both.
T3 operated throughout; the legal work window was tiny, so every noisy trade had to fit into 23:30–04:00.
The terminal sees 45 ℃ seasonal swings and over 100,000 crowd-load cycles a day; ordinary floors quickly debond and crack.
