8 Concepts Worth Understanding Before You Select Stone

🪨
Marble vs Granite
Marble is metamorphic with fine veining — ideal for interior finishes; granite is igneous and harder — ideal for façades and high-traffic floors.
💧
Water Absorption
A key porosity indicator; ≤ 0.5% recommended for façades and wet areas. Every HENGSHENG MARBLE S&T CO. LIMITED batch is tested.
🧭
Class-A Radioactivity
Class-A stone has unrestricted use. Every supplied batch meets Class A (GB 6566).
🎞️
Book Matching
Adjacent slabs cut and laid like an open book for mirrored, continuous veining — the core craft of luxury feature walls.
🌫️
Surface Finishes
Polished / honed / flamed / bush-hammered / acid-washed each fit different settings: flamed and bush-hammered are the outdoor anti-slip choices.
📏
Slabs vs Cut-to-Size
Original slabs (2.4m×1.2m+) suit on-site layout optimization; cut-to-size pieces are machined to drawings at ±0.5mm.
🧱
Ventilated Fixing vs Adhesion
Façades and exterior walls require mechanical fixing (undercut anchors / brackets); interior walls may be adhered, floors are laid with crystallization care.
♻️
Green Certifications & Honors
GREENGUARD Gold covers low indoor emissions; LEED projects can accumulate credits using our test reports.
Industry History · The World

A Brief History of Stone: From the Pyramids to the Digital Quarry

Mankind has worked natural stone for more than five thousand years. Understanding this timeline shows what stands behind every standard slab today — and HENGSHENG MARBLE S&T CO. LIMITED is proud to be the latest link in that chain.

c. 2560 BC

The Pyramids of Giza · Granite's First Large-Scale Deployment

Quarrying granite from Aswan, the ancient Egyptians cut it with copper chisels and shipped it down the Nile — the first time in history mankind organized "long-haul quarry logistics + precision cutting + massive construction" as one supply chain.

447–432 BC

The Parthenon · The Golden Standard of Marble Architecture

Built from Mount Pentelic marble, the Parthenon established "white marble = eternity and the divine" — an aesthetic that still drives the enduring popularity of white marble today.

1st Century BC

Rome · Carrara Quarrying and the Invention of Stone Veneer

The Romans systematically quarried LUNA (today's Carrara) marble and invented "concrete structure + marble cladding" — the conceptual ancestor of today's ventilated stone curtain-wall systems.

1501–1504 AD

The Renaissance · Michelangelo and David

A Carrara block abandoned for 25 years — and already damaged by earlier chisels — became Michelangelo's David. Stone rose from building material to artistic language, and Carrara became the byword for white marble.

Late 19th Century

Industrial Revolution · Steam Gang Saws Bring Marble to Mass Production

Steam-powered gang saws and railways enabled Europe's first industrial-scale quarrying and cross-border trade — marble cladding swept through the banks and theatres of New York, London and Paris.

1970s–1990s

The Diamond Tool Revolution · Frame Saws and Wire Saws

Diamond frame saws replaced sand saws, and diamond wire technology transformed quarrying. Cutting efficiency jumped by an order of magnitude and slab costs fell — marble spread from mansions to commercial and residential spaces.

2000s

The CNC Era · Five-Axis Machining and Waterjet

Five-axis bridge saws and waterjet cutters made custom shapes, precision marquetry and thin-panel composites standard capabilities; "drawing direct to machine" digital production replaced manual templating.

Today

Smart Quarries and Green Certification

AI visual grading, slab scanning and digital book-match design are the hallmark of leading factories; EPD declarations and carbon accounting are the new threshold in international tenders — a five-thousand-year trade is being redefined.

Industry History · Our Story

The HENGSHENG MARBLE S&T CO. LIMITED Story: 27 Years of a Hong Kong Marble Workshop

From a single marble workshop in Hong Kong in 1999 to direct supply from 180+ quarries across 60+ countries and 4,200+ delivered projects — every step of HENGSHENG MARBLE S&T CO. LIMITED's journey has landed on an industry turning point.

Founding Years 1999–2007 · The Hong Kong Workshop Era

HENGSHENG MARBLE S&T CO. LIMITED began in 1999 with residential and retail marble works across Hong Kong. Hand-ground thresholds and countertops for demanding local clients built our first base of loyal customers — and our DNA of "zero compromise on delivery and quality".

Rooted Growth 2008–2015 · Direct Quarry Supply and Our Own Base

To remove middlemen we went straight to the quarries of Fujian and Shandong — a network that now spans 180+ mines worldwide — and built our own 80,000㎡ processing base in Shuitou, bringing bridge saws, waterjets and infrared positioning in-house. "Quarry to site, one company" was born.

Upgrading 2016–2021 · CNC Transformation and Certification

Five-axis CNC lines and digital polishing arrived, accumulating 220+ proprietary processes; a 68-node quality control system was completed and certified under ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 — the workshop had become a factory.

Going Global 2022–Today · Stone Technology Worldwide

AI inspection, slab scanning and digital book-matching went live; green manufacturing and EPD carbon management now align with international standards. In September 2026 the Guangdong (Foshan) processing base came on stream, forming a dual-base structure with Fujian Shuitou. With projects across the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Europe and 1,000+ hotel installations, HENGSHENG MARBLE S&T CO. LIMITED is a regular name on international developers' lists.

Stone Families: A Quick Guide to Six Rock Types

Commercially we say "stone"; geologically it belongs to three families — igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Knowing which family your project falls into answers half of the selection questions.

MarbleMetamorphic

Recrystallised limestone (calcium carbonate) born of heat and pressure. Spectacular veining, excellent workability and mirror polish — but acid-sensitive. Ideal for interior walls and floors, vanities (keep acids away), feature walls and columns.

CarraraCalacattaNero MarquinaEmperador

GraniteIgneous

Crystallised from magma; quartz and feldspar give it extreme hardness, low absorption and acid resistance — the first choice for plazas, curtain walls, kitchen tops and heavy-traffic floors.

LimestoneSedimentary

Deposited on ancient seabeds; soft, even and warm in tone — a European architect's favorite for facades, interior walls and low-wear floors. Avoid strong acids.

PortoroJuraMoleanos

TravertineChemical Sediment

Formed by mineral springs, with natural pores and wavy banding — the stone of ancient Rome. After filling and polishing it gives malls and hotel lobbies a singular sense of history.

Roman ClassicNoceSilver

SandstoneSedimentary

Cemented quartz sand with a matte feel, good slip resistance and warm hues — common in landscaping, facades and leisure spaces. Choose dense varieties to keep absorption low.

Yellow SandstoneTeakwood

Slate & QuartziteMetamorphic

Shale metamorphoses into cleavable slate for roofs and landscapes; sandstone becomes quartzite — near-granite hardness with marble-like veining, the dark horse of the countertop market.

EN 12004 / ANSI A118European / AmericanAdhesive systems for stoneBond-strength classes — the basis for choosing wet-set or ventilated fixing
Water Absorption
How much water the stone's pores take in — lower means denser and more stain-resistant. Marble ≤0.5% and granite ≤0.3% is excellent.
Mohs Hardness
Scratch resistance on a 1–10 scale: granite ≈6–7, marble ≈3–4 — why you never cut directly on marble tops.
Flexural Strength
The bending limit before fracture — the safety-critical figure for curtain-wall anchoring and long tops.
Bulk Density
Weight per cubic metre (kg/m³), typically 2,500–2,800 — drives structural load calc and freight cost.
Slip Rating: R-Value / DCOF
German R9–R13 and US DCOF ≥0.42 for wet areas — hard thresholds for public flooring.
Book-match
Mirroring adjacent slabs so the veining unfolds symmetrically like an open book — the classic luxury-hotel technique.
Slab Size
From 2,400×1,200mm upward; veining continuity and yield directly affect both cost and effect.
EPD Declaration
An ISO 14025 life-cycle carbon document — an increasingly decisive plus in international green-building tenders.
